The Plains Rally 2010
We needed another good result and we got one
Driving the Rallyschool Mazda 2, we managed 2nd in class
Rally report from Dave Read
|
Rallyschool.co.uk had struggled to get hold of a replacement brake servo for the one we had damaged when the engine mounting broke on the Somerset rally, so this was only fitted on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately this new Servo doesn’t seem to work properly and Malcolm had to ‘stand on the pedal’ to get the little Mazda 2 to stop throughout the rally.
SS1 – Big drops and lack of confidence with the brakes meant that we felt that we were slow through here, although the results showed that we weren’t as slow as we thought.
SS2 – Starting to get a bit more confidence with the brakes so began to push a bit more to get the class lead.
SS3 – Because Pantperthog is basically two long uphill sections and two long downhill sections, I think we suffered against the more powerful and better geared Polo on the uphill sections. The Rallyschool.co.uk Mazda 2 is running a totally standard engine & transmission which means we really struggled on the steep uphill sections, running out of revs in 2nd gear but not enough power to pull 3rd gear. This is our only explanation (Excuse!!) of time loss to Tony Simpson as we had a really strong run on the downhill sections.
SS4-SS6 – Good clean run, the brake pedal was still rock hard but Malc knew if he used all his muscles it would stop!! So we pushed hard and managed to pull a few seconds back on the new class leader. Despite the rougher roads we were a full 43 seconds quicker on the second run over Gartheiniog.
SS7 – We went into this short spectator stage knowing that we were still 9 seconds down on the class lead and unlikely to be able to pull that back in less than 2 miles but would still gave it a go!! Unfortunately due to some confusion with marshals frantically waving at us (due to a stopped car) on the split junction we ended up doing a full 360 degree pirouette before continuing. That was enough to give another 4 seconds away to the class leader.
We were happy to finish 2nd in Class and another strong point haul towards the BTRDA championship.
